Phân biệt CHILDLIKE và CHILDISH

I/ PHÂN BIỆT VÀ CÁCH DÙNG

CHILDLIKE và CHILDISH đều là hai tính từ dùng để miêu tả đặc điểm của con người.

Tuy nhiên, trong khi CHILDLIKE mang nghĩa tích cực (ngây thơ) thì CHILDISH mang nghĩa tiêu cực (nghịch ngợm).

1. CHILDLIKE /ˈtʃaɪld.laɪk/

CHILDLIKE là tính từ dùng chỉ người lớn với nhưng tính cách tốt mà trẻ em có. (of adults) showing the good qualities that children have). Đây là một tính từ mang nghĩa tích cực, nghĩa là cư xử ngây thơ, thuần khiết như một đứa trẻ.

Synonym: naive, innocent, natural, simple, etc.

Ví dụ:

Despite being an elderly man, he is very childlike and is often oblivious to serious things around him.
All her life she had a childlike trust in other people.
She is the smallest of the three scientists/professors having a childlike build.

2. CHILDISH /ˈtʃaɪl.dɪʃ/

Trái với CHILDLIKE với nghĩa tích cực, là một kiểu tính cách dễ chịu, CHILDISH thường được dùng với nghĩa tiêu cực, để chỉ những hành động thiếu suy nghĩ, chưa trưởng thành, gây khó chịu mà một người lớn đáng ra không nên làm (behaving badly in a way that would be expected of a child).

Synonym: spontaneous, immature, silly, foolish, etc.

Ví dụ:

He wasn’t enjoying the occasion so he thought he’d spoil it for everyone else – it was very childish of him.
Don’t be so childish – just give me the keys and stop messing about.
She said we should be ashamed of our childish behaviour – fighting over who got the last strawberry.
