Phân biệt FARTHER và FURTHER

Chắc hẳn không ít bạn đã vài lần bối rối khi gặp những câu hỏi từ vựng đòi hỏi phân biệt FARTHER và FURTHER. Cùng là dạng so sánh hơn (đi với “than”) của tính từ “far” (xa), tuy nhiên FARTHER và FURTHER lại có chút khác nhau trong cách sử dụng. Trong khi FATHER dùng để chỉ khoảng cách địa lý, thì FURTHER ám chỉ sự xa hơn về suy nghĩ, mức độ,…

1. FARTHER /ˈfɑː.ðər/

FARTHER có nghĩa là “xa hơn”, từ này thuần túy được dùng để chỉ sự xa cách về khoảng cách điạ lý thực.
(Farther refers to physical distance, meaning more remote)

Ví dụ:

The fog’s so thick, I can’t see farther than about ten metres.
It was farther to the shop than I expected.
Stretch your arm no farther than your sleeve will reach.

2. FURTHER

Ngoài nghĩa “xa hơn” như FARTHER, FURTHER có thể được dịch là “sâu xa hơn, kĩ lưỡng hơn, chi tiết hơn, suy rộng hơn” thậm chí là với nghĩa “hơn nữa, thêm vào đó” khi được dùng làm từ nối (Furthermore).

FURTHER được dùng để nói về sự xa hơn mang tính trừu tượng, nhằm chỉ sự sâu rộng hơn về mức độ, phạm vi. (Further refers to metaphorical distance, meaning to a greater degree or extent)
