Phân biệt OTHER, ANOTHER, OTHERS, THE OTHER và THE OTHERS

I/ PHÂN BIỆT VÀ CÁCH DÙNG

OTHER, ANOTHER, THE OTHER và THE OTHERS được dùng khi đã có 1 đối tượng và người nói muốn nhắc đến 1 hoặc nhiều đối tượng cùng loại khác.

1. OTHER

OTHER được dùng như tính từ đứng trước danh từ số nhiều, dùng để chỉ các đối tượng khác với đối tượng đã đề cập trước đó. (used to refer to a person or thing that is different or distinct from one already mentioned or known about.)

Nghĩa: những cái khác, những người khác.

Ví dụ:
The product has many other time-saving features.
There is no other work available at the moment.
Other students are from Vietnam.

CẤU TRÚC KHÁC:

•  The other day/ week/…: hôm nọ, tuần đó (một khoảng thời gian gần đây nhưng không muốn nhắc chính xác)
  Ví dụ:
  I saw him just the other week.
  I phoned your office the other day.
  We had lunch the other day at our favorite restaurant.

• Other than + N: ngoài, trừ
  Ví dụ:
  Cruises other than the ones listed below are not discounted at this time.
  The form cannot be signed by anyone other than yourself.
  There’s nothing on TV tonight, other than the usual rubbish.

• Or other: hoặc cái khác
  Ví dụ:
  The event was held in some park or other.
  We’ll find someone or other to help us.
  The Foundation is holding a dinner in honour of something or other.

2. ANOTHER

ANOTHER có cách dùng như OTHER, chỉ khác từ này đứng trước danh từ đếm được số ít.

Có thể lược bỏ danh từ sau another nếu danh từ đã xuất hiện trước đó. (used to refer to an additional person or thing of the same type as one already mentioned or known about; one more; a further.)

 Chú ý: Trước ANOTHER không dùng tính từ sở hữu, số từ, lượng từ, hay mạo từ “the”.

Nghĩa: một cái khác, một người khác.

Ví dụ:
You are drinking soda. Do you want another drink?
Mrs. Madrigal buttered another piece of toast.
We’re going to have another baby.

3. OTHERS

OTHERS là danh từ số nhiều, là cách viết tắt của OTHER + Ns khi không muốn nhắc đến danh từ lần 2. Không dùng others + danh từ đếm được số nhiều/ danh từ không đếm được.

Nghĩa: những người khác, những cái khác

Ví dụ:
Some of my students like Math, others (= other students) don’t.
Some projects are shorter than others (=other projects).
Some of these methods will work. Others (=other methods) will not.

4. THE OTHER

Như đã biết, THE là mạo từ thêm vào trước danh từ để thể hiện tính xác định của danh từ đi sau. Ta dùng THE OTHER khi có 2 chủ thể mà nhắc tới 1 cái, ta nghĩ ngay đến cái còn lại..

THE OTHER đứng một mình được hiểu là cái kia, người còn lại (một đối tượng).

Nghĩa: cái còn lại, người còn lại

Ví dụ:
I have two elder sisters. One is a teacher. The other (sister) is an artist.
I’ll read the other sections of the paper later.
I don’t like the red one. I prefer the other colour.

5. THE OTHERS

THE OTHERS ám chỉ những đối tượng còn lại của một tổng thể đã biết. Đây là cách viết tắt của THE OTHER + Ns.
OTHERS ở đây đã đóng vai trò danh từ nên KHÔNG cần danh từ đi sau.

Ví dụ:
I have three close friends, one of them is a lawyer, the others (=the other friends) are teacher.
There are 20 pigs. One is fat, the others (= the other pigs) are thin.
This is the only book of his worth reading. The others (= the other books) are rubbish.

II/ BÀI TẬP VẬN DỤNG

1. Some music calms people; (OTHER/ ANOTHER/ THE OTHERS) music has the opposite effect.
2. I’m afraid I can’t do the work tomorrow. Let’s do it (OTHER/ OTHERS/ ANOTHER) time.
3. Some of the speakers went straight to the conference room. (THE OTHERS/ THE OTHER/ OTHERS) speakersare still hanging around.
4. He got 100% in the final examination. No (ANOTHER/ OTHER/ THE OTHER) student has ever achieved that.
5. I shall wait until (THE OTHERS/ OTHER/ OTHERS) come back.
6. Jonathan separated himself from (THE OTHER/ THE OTHERS/ ANOTHER) children.
7. Do you know (OTHERS/ THE OTHERS/ ANOTHER) way to do this job?
8. Dan is on his way here, what about (OTHERS/ THE OTHERS/ ANOTHER)?
9. Jeremy is at university; our (ANOTHER/ OTHER/ OTHERS) son is still at school.
10. He closed the door and walked around to (OTHER/ THE OTHERS/ THE OTHER) side.
11. If he treats me differently than (OTHER/ ANOTHER/ OTHERS), I’m sure it’s because we are married.
12. There’s one (OTHER/ OTHERS/ THE OTHERS) thing we need to discuss before we finish.
13. This cake is delicious! Can I have(OTHERS/ ANOTHER/ THE OTHER) slice, please?
14. There were three books on my table. One is here. Where are (OTHERS/ THE OTHERS/ ANOTHER)?
15. I may be connected to (OTHER/ OTHERS/ ANOTHER) people, but still it is all about me.
16. This shirt is too big; I’ll try (OTHER/ THE OTHER/ ANOTHER).
17. The post office is on one side, the bank is on (THE OTHER/ OTHER/ OTHERS) side of the street.
18. This one’s too big. Do you have it in (OTHER/ ANOTHER. THE OTHER) sizes?
19. Tomorrow’s (ANOTHER/ THE OTHER/ OTHER) day.
20. Why do some houses get broken into and (OTHER/ OTHERS/ ANOTHER) don’t?
